House of Atreus

Thyestes

The Wronged Brother

The Banquet

Thyestes' story is one of catastrophic betrayal. After being driven from Mycenae for his affair with Atreus's wife, he was lured back under the pretense of peace — only to be fed the flesh of his own children.

The horror of this moment echoes through all Greek tragedy. When Atreus revealed what Thyestes had consumed, he showed him the severed heads and hands of his sons. Thyestes cursed the House of Atreus with a fury that would outlast generations.

The Instrument of Revenge

An oracle told Thyestes that only a son born of his own daughter could avenge him. In desperation, he fathered Aegisthus upon his daughter Pelopia — a child conceived in darkness for the sole purpose of destroying Atreus's line.

Aegisthus would grow up to murder Atreus, help Clytemnestra slay Agamemnon, and rule Mycenae — until Orestes completed the cycle of vengeance.

“The wrongs of fathers are visited upon children, but Thyestes ensured the debt would be repaid.”— Hyginus, Fabulae
