Achilles

The Swift-Footed

The Choice

Before Troy, Achilles' mother Thetis gave him a choice: a long, peaceful life forgotten by history, or a short life of incomparable glory. He chose glory. This decision — the willingness to trade length of life for meaning — defines him.

He was the son of the mortal Peleus and the sea goddess Thetis, raised by the centaur Chiron. His divine parentage made him nearly invulnerable, but his mortality — concentrated in his heel — was the price of being born partly human.

The Wrath

The Iliad opens with Achilles' rage at Agamemnon, who seized his war-prize Briseis. Achilles withdrew from battle, and without him the Greeks suffered catastrophic losses. His anger was not petty — it was about honor (timē), the only currency that mattered to a warrior who had already chosen death.

When Patroclus fell wearing Achilles' own armor, struck down by Hector, Achilles' grief transformed his wrath from political protest into cosmic fury. He returned to battle not for Agamemnon but for Patroclus — and nothing could stand before him.

The Death of Hector

Achilles pursued Hector three times around the walls of Troy before killing him. He then dragged Hector's body behind his chariot for days — a desecration that horrified even the gods. Only when Priam came alone to beg for his son's body did Achilles relent.

That scene — the old king and the young warrior weeping together, each mourning what the war had taken — is perhaps the most human moment in the Iliad. Achilles would die soon after, struck by Paris's arrow guided by Apollo.

“I say no wealth is worth my life. Cattle and fat sheep can be had for the taking, but a man's life — once gone — can never be won back.”— Homer, Iliad 9.401–409
“Now I shall go to meet the killer of the man I loved. I will accept my death whenever Zeus and the other gods see fit to bring it.”— Homer, Iliad 18.114–116
